| The store, on Clark Point Road, was T.W. Jackson & Son, an IGA store. “R.B. Jackson [Richard Benson Jackson (1893-1959)] is having a building erected on his lot lately purchased from P.L. Sargent. A filling station and other conveniences will be established there, and the extensive grounds opened as a parking place. This will be a great convenience to the customers of the Jackson market.” – The Ellsworth American, Wednesday, April 15, 1936. "In the 1930s and 40s, Jackson's Market of Southwest Harbor sent a boat and operated a weekly market on the old steamboat wharf [on Little Cranberry Island] during the summer. In addition to meat and vegetables, a youthful stamp collector could find a small envelope of stamps inside each package of Brookfield butter." - “A History of Little Cranberry Island, Maine” by Hugh L. | A important printer and publisher since 1887 that utilized the albertype process. They first started printing books and then pioneer cards by 1893 going on to become a major publisher of national view-cards. Their postcards were not numbered and their name appears within the stamp box on their early cards. When the divided back postcard was authorized, the Albertype company created a line down the back of their cards with the words Post Cards of Quality and later with The Finest American Made View Post Cards. Many publishers large and small printed cards though the Albertype Co. They were purchased by Art Vue Post Card Company in 1952. Original Owner: Adolph and Herman Wittemann Known for: Fine View Cards printed with good detail. Duration: 1887-1952 Sold to Art Vue Post Card Company in 1952. | The Valentine Company, a lithographic printing firm, was founded in 1825 in Dundee, Scotland by John Valentine. A New York branch was opened in 1906 and later another office opened in Boston, Massachusetts. Valentines published view-cards depicting scenes throughout the country. While many of these cards were printed in the United States in their later years, they have the exact same distinct look of the tinted halftones that were printed in Great Britain. All cards are numbered and have a three digit prefix and a three digit suffix. In 1909 they merged with the Hugh C. Leighton Company of Portland, Maine to become Leighton and Valentine. |

Postcards have always been a popular item, especially for travelers, but at the turn of the century they were the absolute rage. The company continued producing black and white cards through the 1950s and made color postcards through the 1980s. Sometime in the 1940s or 1950s the company switched from glass plates to film. At first the information was hand written, and later it was printed. The Eastern Illustrating logo varied through the years." | In 1881 Dr. Fulton’s office and residence were on the northeast corner of Main Street and School Street (now 194 Main Street, Tax Map 136 – Lot 210) in Ellsworth. The building has an ell on School Street with a separate entrance. This was typical of Dr.’s offices of the time and probably served both Alexander and Abby’s patients. In 1883 Alexander Fulton was listed as a member of the Board of Health in Ellsworth, Maine. Physicians practicing in Ellsworth were: Emerson Googins, L. W. Hodgkins, Geo. Parcher, K. H. Swett, Alexander Fulton, Mrs. Abby Fulton, G. A. Phillips, O. M. Drake and Walter M. Haines, Hon. Alexander was still practicing in Ellsworth in 1887. |

After Luther’s death in 1960, his brother, Augustus Dewey Phillips, took over the map and postcard business. Augustus’ son, Donald Beekman Phillips (1935-2009) then continued the enterprise. |
