Raymond was Captain for Thomas Sovereign Gates Jr. (1906-1983) and his family at their cottage, "Jericho House" on Manchester Road, Northeast Harbor and famously built pleasure boat "Jericho" for him in 1950. The Cornerstone Baptist Church was founded on March 16, 1952 in a farmhouse across from Seal Cove Pond that later became Seal Cove Farm, with ten members. The pastor was Rev. George Wood. In 1953 the little congregation paid $16,000 to buy the old West Tremont Schoolhouse. They added a Sunday school wing in the 1960s.

Ballard wrote this note on the negative sleeve for the photograph: "“Bluenose” Ferry Terminal, Bar Harbor, ME; taken the day the Bar Harbor-Yarmouth ferry was officially welcomed (service had been on since the early part of January). Blowing a hard SE gale, and I had to press down so hard on the camera that the tripod sagged. I was the only one who remained on the ridge."
