| The 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing in America inspired the first official Columbus Day holiday in the United States. President Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation in 1892, “recommending to the people the observance in all their localities of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America…” and describing Columbus as “the pioneer of progress and enlightenment.” On the four hundredth anniversary teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress. Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in 1937. Celebrants in this photograph of the 1892 anniversary are dressed in their best wool and satin. Many of the children are holding flags and several of them sport berets made of starred fabric. The building on the right with the striped roof is the firm of Clark & Parker/Manset Marine Supply Co./ and the Oceanarium since 1979. The Oceanarium is the oldest commercial building on Clark Point - the only one extant except the Clarence Clark House. The Manset shore is in the background with discernible landmarks, including the Manset Union Church, the Stanley wharf, the early Stanley House and numerous commercial buildings on the Shore Road. | There are several street lamps visible in the photograph - the one on the right is different from the others. The lamp post on the left is at the corner of Clark Point Road. The building with the overhang beyond it is the Odd Fellows building. The building on the right is J.C. Ralph's Studio - Optician and Jeweler - and the Post Office. A man is standing in the door of the Post Office and a man standing in front of Ralph's Studio. The photograph was taken soon after John Ralph moved his store and expanded it. “In 1897, the different societies in the village combined to raise funds for street lights. The lamps were bought and placed near those houses whose owners were willing to furnish the kerosene and keep the lamps trimmed and lighted. These lamps did duty until the installation of electricity in the summer of 1917.” - “Traditions and Records of Southwest Harbor and Somesville, Mount Desert Island, Maine” by Mrs. Seth S. The side wall on the left of this old school was constructed of boards tightly nailed together. The back wall was painted brick. The drawings of children with pinafores, pinned to the left wall, were done by the children and in crayon. We know that the photograph was taken in October from the owls and black cats and autumn leaf décor, still universally used in school rooms around Halloween. | About this photo, George Bedigan wrote: "I have enclosed scan of my father’s (Jean Bedigian) discharge papers from SS Norembega. The picture in question looks to be more circa 1920 than 1902. I say that after examining the gentleman with the suit and tie. If Jean Bedigian is in the photo it would be the fourth crew member from the left. I do not have a photo of him at that time but a photo of one of his sons (attached .. soldier on the right ) has a likeness. Also he was not a tall man approx. 5’ 7”.
