It is the site of the Red Sky Restaurant in 2008. The Southwest Harbor band was formed in 1892. Ralph built his first violin, the “Underwood” violin, in 1955 using a birch stair tread from the demolished Underwood cottage, “Squirrelhurst.” The tradition of Lion’s Head scrolls goes as far back as at least the 17th Century when Austrian Jakob Stainer, “one of the great violin makers of all times” made his Lion’s Head scroll violins.
