A collection of yet to be curated photographs of the construction of picket boats built by the Henry R. Hinckley Company for the military during WWII. A picket boat is a type of small naval craft used for harbor patrol and other close inshore work. "There were two open storage sheds [in 1941] in Manset. When the Coast Guard boat contract [for picket boats] came, we had to set about immediately joining these buildings together in order to have a place to build them. These buildings are still part of the main assembly building." – The Hinckley Story, p. 30.

The building was Dr. Lemont's office and store on the south side of Clark Point Road leaving Main Street. The building, then Cuz's Café, burned on January 30, 1955. It is the site of the Red Sky Restaurant in 2008. The Southwest Harbor band was formed in 1892. Ralph built his first violin, the “Underwood” violin, in 1955 using a birch stair tread from the demolished Underwood cottage, “Squirrelhurst.” The tradition of Lion’s Head scrolls goes as far back as at least the 17th Century when Austrian Jakob Stainer, “one of the great violin makers of all times” made his Lion’s Head scroll violins.
