A freight bill for 3 casks of lime for Capt. James Long (1814-1895) signed by Jo. R. Freeman [John T.R. Freeman (1838-1916)] and paid at Mt. Desert on November 2, 1853. As can be seen from the account below, "Rockland" was supposed to have been built in 1853 and to have gone into service in 1854, but this bill of lading clearly shows that she was working in the Mt. Desert area as early as November 1853. She may have gone on the water in 1853 and done some freight work in the area before she started her career on the passenger route in 1854. The 1857 date may just be an error.

Harbor, within his limit of said Town, having given lawful notices of their meeting to examine the premises and give a hearing to all parties interested therein, and having met at this time and place appointed and for the purposes named in said notice, and having decided that the extension asked for would not be an obstruction to navigation nor an injury to the rights of others, in accordance with the Statutes of this State, do hereby issue this license unto the said William H. Ward authorizing him to extend his wharf into the tide-waters of said SouthWest Harbor; said extension not to exceed one hundred feet in width and three hundred feet in length, in a northeasterly direction from the pier now standing on said Ward's Shore, on the southwesterly side of said S.W. John Melbourne Rich took the design for his new house in Tremont from Design 24 in the 1888 version of Palliser's "New Cottage Homes and Details." The Pallisers showed two versions of Design 24. One, a modest house without a tower, and one, a showpiece with tower that could be built for a "cost of $1,700." For this amount one received, "plans, elevations, details and perspective view of a comfortable, convenient cottage home of six rooms, with tower which is designed to command a view of the surrounding country where erected." John Melbourne Rich chose the showy tower version with which to command a view of Tremont. He probably did not pay $1,700 for the plans, being an experienced builder, perfectly capable of building what he wanted by looking at the plans in the prospectus. John Melbourne Rich built his house in 1896. "John Rich [1853-1919] whose house was burnt a short time ago near Duck Cove, has bought a house-lot near the bridge on the west side [of Bass Harbor] and will build this fall. He is digging the cellar now." - The Ellsworth American, September 10, 1896.

In 1894 Arno Preston Stanley (1865-1937) wrote a letter to his fourth cousin, Mabelle Estelle Stanley (1868-1955), daughter of Robert S. Stanley and Phoebe Jane (Gilley) Stanley, [both descended from Sans Stanley (1702-) and Mary (Charder) Stanley (1706-1748)] and asked for her hand in marriage: "Dear Mabel I love you with all my heart and I am willing to part with all on earth for your presents if you will join with me now at the present time but after you read this, and don’t see fit to join with me I will say no more about it and give up and die in despair I shall feel as if I have not a friend on earth if you say no if you choose others ways I hope you will be happy Through life and when I die I hope to meet with you in heaven if god is willing for me to please write on this peper and give me ether way you choose This is the way I feel I trust in god that we may be happy through life if you ascept please answer yes or no and give me this piece of peper back Yours Truly Arno. P. Stanley Live or die I shall think of you as a friend and one that love you well and you may think as you please" Mabelle added a penciled note, “Yes Dear,” in the space provided in his letter. They filed their intention to marry on October 25, 1894 and were married on November 3, 1894 at Cranberry Isles. Mabelle died on March 24, 1955, at the age of 86, at the Bay View Nursing Home in South Portland, Maine. She had saved the hopeful, loving letter Arno had written to her 61 years before. Her family buried her near Arno in the Stanley Cemetery No. 3 (Map 6 – Lot 1), Great Cranberry Island, Maine. Arno would have been living at his father, Enoch Boynton Stanley's house at Great Cranberry Island when he wrote the letter. Mabel's name was spelled Mabelle on her gravestone and curators use that spelling, but have left Arno's Mabel as it appears in his letter. Arno and Mabel's grandson, Ralph Warren Stanley, surmises that she was known as Mabel and that her relatives put on airs when they changed it to Mabelle on her gravestone.
