Taken later than the view shown in Item 5663, this view shows a little greenery grown up around the small hotel perched on granite. The Mountain House, built in 1866, was the first hotel to be built on what was then Green Mountain, now Cadillac Mountain. "Daniel Brewer's Mountain House operated through the early 1880's, offering simple, but hearty meals and modest overnight lodging. During the 1870's as many as 3,000 visitors patronized the place each summer." - Steam to the Summit: The Green Mountain Railway - Bar Harbor’s Remarkable Cog Railroad, by Peter Dow Bachelder, p. 24 - 2005. This building was replaced with a much larger structure, The Green Mountain House, when the Green Mountain Railway was built in 1883.

The 20-year old business administration student at University of Maine at Orono says he plans to hang onto the land, which was donated by Conley Worcester of Southwest Harbor. Margo Stanley, at left, holds the copy of Thornton’s History of Somesville and Southwest Harbor that was won by the Southwest Harbor branch of the First National Bank of Bar Harbor. The second prize, a free, round-trip on Bar Harbor Airlines was won by Vaughn Marshall of Machias. The cars are probably a 1936 Ford and a 1936 Oldsmobile. The building on the left is the Dudley Luther Mayo house. The white building, then the Carroll Building on Main Street in Southwest Harbor, housed Carroll Drug Store and the A&P. The village green is just visible to the right of the building.

The excursion boat "Seal" in the center of the photograph was built by Normand Joseph Bouchard for Linwood Boynton Wedge (1913-1961) and Woodrow Wilson Herrick (1914-2002) to be used as a dragger. "Seal" was owned by Samuel A. Blanchard (1926-2009) who took out fishing parties on her. - Information from Ralph Stanley 05/2011 The boat to the right of "Seal" was "Eva Anita" a 40' lobster boat built in 1959 by Bunker & Ellis for Wesley Bracy of Great Cranberry Island.

“Must have been a special occasion” - Note by W.H. Ballard on the negative sleeve. Mr. Ballard apparently wrote the note some years after taking the photograph. It is possible that, from research quoted below, he took the photograph at the time of the first resolution in honor of Oscar Seavey by the town of Southwest Harbor in 1949. “The first school bus was a green 1938 Ford with mechanical brakes. Every morning Oscar Seavey would get under the bus and adjust the brakes.” – Ralph Stanley 05/11 This photograph shows the new International bus purchased in 1948 - also possibly the "special occasion" mentioned by Ballard.
