Eugene Shubal Thurston Sr. (1881-1961) was born on January 30, 1881 to Charles Dix Thurston and Elizabeth “Lizzie” E. (Moulden) Thurston in Tremont, Maine. Eugene married first Alice May Orr (1883-1944), daughter of Alonzo A. Orr and Mary J. (Seavey) Orr of Lincoln, Maine, on May 9, 1903 in Eden, Maine. Angus M. MacDonald performed the ceremony. Eugene married second Flora Olive Davis (1901-1982), daughter of Leamon T. Davis and Agnes F. (Joyce) Davis on September 19, 1948 in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Eugene S. Thurston died on April 21, 1961 at Staten Island, New York. When Eugene registered for the draft in 1918 he was a jeweler. Eugene was the proprietor of "E.S. Thurston Jewellry Store" in the first Odd Fellows Building at 357 Main Street in 1914. "The store of Eugene S. Thurston, Southwest Harbor, Me., recently suffered a loss of $800 through fire. This loss was covered by insurance. Mr. Thurston is no longer in business." – The Jewellers’ Circular, May 3, 1922. The store would have been lost in the March 27, 1922 Southwest Harbor Fire that destroyed much of the business district. In 1919 he was a picture framer and listed in the Maine Register. Eugene Shubal Thurston Sr. (1881-1961) was Postmaster in Southwest Harbor [known at that time as South West Harbor] from December 22, 1921 to April 25, 1934. In 1940 he was an inspector for the Liquor Commission.
