| “In 1982, I built a twenty-eight-foot boat called the “Rose” for Peter Godfrey. She was based on L. Francis Herreshoff’s design for the “Rozinante,” which is called a canoe yawl but is actually a ketch. She had a teak deck, and she was really quite a fancy boat. Peter had Herreshoff’s plans, and that boat always interested me, from way back when I first saw her in “Rudder” magazine and read about her as a kid. But there were some parts that I didn’t like, and when I built the “Rose,” I had the opportunity to change those and do it my own way. Herreshoff’s original “Rozinante” was designed to be built with a skeg that came straight down from the deadwood. I changed that and made the boat with a built-down keel. That gave her a wineglass shape and made her much stronger. I didn’t like some of Herreshoff’s way of fastening things together either, like fastening the keel on with lag screws. So I used bolts. Though not terribly beamy by today’s standards, the B 40’s 11-foot, 9-inch beam is substantial.
