"Janet "Jane" W. Earl, of Bath and Winter Harbor, ME, age 89, died Friday, (September 10, 2004) at Hill House Assisted Living Facility in Bath, ME.

Born on Aug. 18, 1915 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Edna Thompson Whitmore and John Lawler Whitmore, Jane was raised in Wahiawa, Hawaii and graduated from Punahou School in Honolulu in 1933. Although she never again lived in Hawaii after 1933, she visited several times and always maintained a life-long love of Hawaii. She attended Wheaton College and then transferred to the Academy of Allied Arts in New York City and studied modern dance with Martha Graham and Charles Weidman. In 1938 Jane married Theodore A. Earl and moved to Bath. From 1945-51 she resided in Northeast Harbor, Maine. In 1951 the family moved to Simsbury, where she lived until 1995, when she moved to The Highlands in Topsham, ME.

Jane is survived by four children and seven grandchildren: Thomas A. Earl and his wife, Susan, of Mesa, AZ, and their children Daniel and Kathryn; Peter W. Earl of Dover, NH; Victoria E. Simpson and her husband Henry of Bath, ME and their children Julia and John; and Polly J. Earl and her husband Richard Robles of Fort Fairfield, ME, and their children Arthur and Griffin; and a daughter-in-law Elise Earl and her son Jack of North Chatham, NH. She is also survived by a sister, Gladys Whitmore Butler and her husband Farnham of Mount Desert, ME, and several nieces and nephews. Jane was predeceased by her loving husband of 47 years, Theodore A. Earl; a son, Brian Pendleton Earl, father of Jack; and a brother, Tyler Whitmore of New York. Jane was known for her gracious style, thirst for knowledge, and sense of humor. She had many interests, including reading, the arts, and nature. Jane was a self-taught cook and seamstress, created beautiful hooked and braided rugs, quilts and custom clothing, and baked fabulous desserts for her family and friends. She especially treasured her retirement years in Winter Harbor and time with her husband sailing the coast of Maine. To her children she was a constant source of optimism, support, and love and throughout her entire life they saw her as an incredible mother and as a model human being.

The family will hold a private service in Winter Harbor. If desired, memorial donations could be made to The Winter Harbor Library, Winter Harbor, ME 04693 or to a charity of one's choice." - The Hartford Courant, October 31, 2004
