Downs - Samuel Morse Downs (1836-1909)

Samuel Morse Downs was born to Ephraim F. or K. and Irene S. Morse Downs in 1836 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Ephraim was a shoemaker in Haverhill in 1850. Their children were Huldah, Silas M., Maria, and Samuel.

Annie Sawyer and Samuel Morse Downs were married on August 15, 1860 in Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

From 1860 to 1907, Samuel Morse Downs taught at Abbot Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, which was later subsumed by Phillips Academy. Annie taught History, Art and English Literature there in the years, 1876-78, 1879-80, 1881-82, and 1886-87.

The Fidelio Society is the oldest musical organization at Phillips Academy, having been founded at Abbot Academy by Samuel Morse Downs in 1887.

Samuel Morse Downs died on October 30, 1909 in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.
