Robinson house, which then occupied what is now 410 Main Street in Southwest Harbor – Map 3 – Lot 44 – MHPC #405-0145. The building to its right in the photograph is the Farnsworth Store. The house in the foreground right - behind the tennis players is: Joseph Gilman Parker Jr. House ME – SWH – Clark Point Road - 114 The tennis players were most probably guests at the Island House across Clark Point Road from where they are playing on its lawn. |

| About this photo, George Bedigan wrote: "I have enclosed scan of my father’s (Jean Bedigian) discharge papers from SS Norembega. The picture in question looks to be more circa 1920 than 1902. I say that after examining the gentleman with the suit and tie. If Jean Bedigian is in the photo it would be the fourth crew member from the left. I do not have a photo of him at that time but a photo of one of his sons (attached .. soldier on the right ) has a likeness. Also he was not a tall man approx. 5’ 7”. Jean’s mother (Zois) and sister(Maria who married an American soldier) emigrated to the US after the first world war and may have settled in the area." Jean Bedigian (1885-1950) |

| The 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing in America inspired the first official Columbus Day holiday in the United States. President Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation in 1892, “recommending to the people the observance in all their localities of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America…” and describing Columbus as “the pioneer of progress and enlightenment.” On the four hundredth anniversary teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress. Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in 1937. Celebrants in this photograph of the 1892 anniversary are dressed in their best wool and satin. Many of the children are holding flags and several of them sport berets made of starred fabric. Hinckley house - now [2017] the site of Western Way Condominiums, built in 1986 at 10-5 to 10-22 Robinson Lane, Southwest Harbor - Tax Map 16 - Lot 3. Notice the corset out to dry on the clothes line. |
