| "This is a picture of the 5th and 6th graders at the Freeman Grammar School taken in 1916. It appears to be a special occasion with the flowers on the desk and the students all looking so serious as their photograph is being taken. This room is located upstairs at Harbor House on the side of the building next to the Lawrence S. Robinson Co. I attended the 4th and 5th grades in that room. It was sunnier than the rooms on the north side of the building, so when my fourth grade teacher, Gladys Whitmore, retired the fifth grade teacher, Bertha Reed, seized the opportunity to move the fifth grade across the hall. I recall feeling a bit disappointed at first that I would not get to be in a different room in the fifth grade, but as I like lots of sun, I think overall I lucked out after all." - Meredith Hutchins 01/24/2012 |

| The 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing in America inspired the first official Columbus Day holiday in the United States. President Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation in 1892, “recommending to the people the observance in all their localities of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America…” and describing Columbus as “the pioneer of progress and enlightenment.” On the four hundredth anniversary teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress. Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in 1937. Description: The 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing in America inspired the first official Columbus Day holiday in the United States. President Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation in 1892, “recommending to the people the observance in all their localities of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America…” and describing Columbus as “the pioneer of progress and enlightenment.” On the four hundredth anniversary teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress. Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in 1937. It is the site of the Red Sky Restaurant in 2008. The Southwest Harbor band was formed in 1892. | About this photo, George Bedigan wrote: "I have enclosed scan of my father’s (Jean Bedigian) discharge papers from SS Norembega. The picture in question looks to be more circa 1920 than 1902. I say that after examining the gentleman with the suit and tie. If Jean Bedigian is in the photo it would be the fourth crew member from the left. I do not have a photo of him at that time but a photo of one of his sons (attached .. soldier on the right ) has a likeness. Also he was not a tall man approx. 5’ 7”.
