| George Soules photographed the interior of the Criterion from the balcony with a Canon 5D Mark III DSLR and a Canon 24mm tilt/shift lens using available light, which there was little of. To the naked eye, the space does not look nearly this bright. The first image (angle view) is a four-slice panorama with a 140° field of view. It is a composite of 12 different frames. The second image (straight-on view) is a six-slice panorama with a 190° field of view. It is a composite of 18 different frames. Both images were shot at f/8, ISO 400, with three different exposures for each slice. Exposures ranged from 10 seconds for the main room to 1/25th second for the chandelier. |

He used a Canon 5D Mark III digital SLR camera and a Canon 45mm f/2.8 tilt/shift lens shooting 1/125 sec, f/5.6 at ISO 100. The pano is a combination of 16 images stitched together to capture a view of approximately 270°. |

| "I captured this scene from the end of the Manset Town dock. Though the view appears very wide, it's only about 90° from end to end. It seems wider because I shot it with a 200mm lens to get the detail along the shore with minimal water and sky. I stitched the panorama from 17 separate images taken left to right, each frame rotated 5° to the right of the previous one. Yesterday I saw this same scene while driving around to take the pictures posted here, but when I arrived at this spot the sun was too high and I didn't have my tripod with me. This morning I got up before dawn and set up my tripod on the snow-covered dock at 6:15 AM. Then I waited in the bitter cold for the sun to rise. Fresh snow that fell last night made the scene even better than it was yesterday. Sometimes it just works out that way. " -- George Soules |

| The first lobster boat in the foreground, on the dock, M2721A, may have been built by Rich & Grindle for George Dolliver. The excursion boat "Seal" in the center of the photograph was built by Normand Joseph Bouchard for Linwood Boynton Wedge (1913-1961) and Woodrow Wilson Herrick (1914-2002) to be used as a dragger. "Seal" was owned by Samuel A. Blanchard (1926-2009) who took out fishing parties on her. - Information from Ralph Stanley 05/2011 The boat to the right of "Seal" was "Eva Anita" a 40' lobster boat built in 1959 by Bunker & Ellis for Wesley Bracy of Great Cranberry Island. |

Ballard wrote this note on the negative sleeve for the photograph: "“Bluenose” Ferry Terminal, Bar Harbor, ME; taken the day the Bar Harbor-Yarmouth ferry was officially welcomed (service had been on since the early part of January). Blowing a hard SE gale, and I had to press down so hard on the camera that the tripod sagged. I was the only one who remained on the ridge." |

| The automobile to the right of the vessel is a circa 1948 Jeep CJ (Civilian Jeep) Note the peavey stuck into the ground (above the “O” on the “DETOUR” sign). A peavey is a logging tool with a wooden shaft and metal hook invented in 1857 by blacksmith Joseph Daniel Peavey (1799-1873) of Stillwater, Maine, as a refinement to the cant hook to manhandle logs on logging runs. The Peavey Manufacturing Co. is still located in Maine (Eddington, Maine) and manufactures several variations. |
