While the photograph is old and in disrepair, up close the desks and chairs can be seen to shine indicating that, if not new, they were at least kept very clean. The side wall on the left of this old school was constructed of boards tightly nailed together. The back wall was painted brick. The drawings of children with pinafores, pinned to the left wall, were done by the children and in crayon. We know that the photograph was taken in October from the owls and black cats and autumn leaf décor, still universally used in school rooms around Halloween. Students Rows Left to Right - Front to Back: First Row on Left: Unknown girl Unknown girl Unknown girl Unknown girl Teacher - standing Second Row: Marian F. Taken on the same day as SWHPL 11752, but with the teachers standing in different places. The identities were written on the back of SWHPL 11752, taken on the same day. The children seem to be in the same places, but the teachers are standing in different places. Researchers have identified the children, but not the order in which they appear. The children whose places are noted below may apply to one or the other of the photographs. Teachers are Luther Bridges of Blue Hill and Alice E. Mason (1879-1964). James L. Grant (1895-1981) – brother to Doris M. Grant Hall Quarry – small blonde boy, third row on right. Doris M. Grant (1899-1987) – sister to James L. Grant Hall Quarry – second row, third from left. Delma Lanpher, probably Andelman William Lanpher (1894-1969) second from left in next to last row. Others in the picture are: Stella Cookson (1892-) Martina B. Harriman (1895-1985), later Mrs. Unknown O’Brien Helen Virginia Seavey (1908-1996), later Mrs. Dyer Annie Reed Merchant Mary Richardson (1894-1946), later Mrs. Irving H. 8091Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's The Village Blacksmith on a Blackboard
  • Image, Photograph
  • Organizations, School Institution
  • 1906 c.
  • Southwest Harbor
When the new schoolhouse was built, the old building was sold to George Harmon and it was used for stores and apartments. Many years later the owners of the Harmon Block found, in one of the rooms, an old blackboard from when their building had been a school. On the blackboard was still part of the poem, "The Village Blacksmith" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and some doodling on it, remnants of a lesson from circa 1906! This date refers to the time the blackboard was last used. The board shows the 4th stanza of the poem: "And children coming home from school Look in at the open door; They love to see the flaming forge, And hear the bellows roar, And catch the burning sparks that fly Like chaff from a threshing floor." (From "The Village Blacksmith" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow from "Ballads and Other Poems" published in 1841)

"This is a picture of the 5th and 6th graders at the Freeman Grammar School taken in 1916. It appears to be a special occasion with the flowers on the desk and the students all looking so serious as their photograph is being taken. This room is located upstairs at Harbor House on the side of the building next to the Lawrence S. Robinson Co. I attended the 4th and 5th grades in that room. It was sunnier than the rooms on the north side of the building, so when my fourth grade teacher, Gladys Whitmore, retired the fifth grade teacher, Bertha Reed, seized the opportunity to move the fifth grade across the hall. I recall feeling a bit disappointed at first that I would not get to be in a different room in the fifth grade, but as I like lots of sun, I think overall I lucked out after all." - Meredith Hutchins 01/24/2012
