From the Curator
School pictures are prominent in the Archive – everything from early photographs of school classes composed of little girls in starched pinafores and little boys who have walked to school barefoot to W.H. Ballard’s class photographs 1937-1963, which are among the several thousand Ballard photographs owned by the library – not to mention the Pemetic School yearbooks, 1910 and 1921-1968 (1928 missing).
Because local residents who gave school photographs to the library starting circa 1900 often carefully marked the names of the students on the back of each photograph many of the students are identified. Most of these holdings are scanned and a great many of them appear in the archive. Others are waiting for the time and funds to add them.
There are many churches and church groups, a town band or two, several early girls and boys basketball teams, a large group concerning the Southwest Harbor Public Library, many photographs of the CCC company based here, the usual variety of fraternal organizations and photographs of the Champlain Society with biographies of its members written with emphasis on what these young men did later in life.
